Apps every freshman needs to download

By ALICIA SZCZESNIAK | For The Post

Moving to campus is overwhelming. Trying to keep track of classes, meet friends and orient yourself in a new place is both terrifying and exciting at the same time. To help with that, here are a few apps to make the adjustment a little easier.

TimeTree

Trying to figure out schedules for yourself is exhausting, let alone with new friends. TimeTree is the answer for that. It allows you to set up group calendars with your friends to properly schedule hangouts while keeping yourself on track with your classes and other obligations.

Yik Yak

Picture an anonymous Twitter made up solely of people from your campus. That’s Yik Yak, a great place to post memes, incoherent stream-of-consciousness style thoughts and about events on campus (who knows, maybe you’ll find some fun events through it). Although it may keep you distracted from studying for several minutes (maybe hours), it's ultimately a great way to take a quick study break or pass some free time in a fun way.

Quizlet

Okay, you probably used this throughout high school, but trust me when I say that this app is still saving lives in college. The study app has made my life infinitely easier for many of my gen-ed classes and classes that involve memorization.

Treecard

Let’s face it, whether you like it or not, you're going to be walking A LOT on campus. Everything from your walks to class, the dining hall or Court Street is going to rack up steps really quickly. So, why not put those steps to a good cause? Enter Treecard, an app that tracks your steps and plants a tree for every 10,000 you take.

Slack

The best way to describe Slack is as a digital workspace akin to platforms like Discord. However, Slack is a much more professional platform, and will more than likely be the main form of communication for many of your on-campus professional organizations, as well as a potential form of communication for your post-grad jobs, so you might as well get a headstart and preemptively download it.

Venmo

In an increasingly cashless society, trying to split a bill or pay someone back is getting increasingly annoying. This is where Venmo comes in, a digital payment app that hooks up to your bank account and makes paying people back much, much easier.

Blackboard

All of your classes are going to have the notes, quizzes, tests and assignments posted on Blackboard, so it’s for the best to download it on your phone as soon as possible. And when the inevitable “Did I turn that assignment in?” question arises during a night out, you can check on the go.

GasBuddy

If you’re one of those lucky (or sometimes unlucky) freshmen with a car, gas becomes an incredibly annoying expense when you're spending more money than usual. However, GasBuddy makes it easier to save some money on gas by showing the price of gas at stations in your area, allowing you to find cheaper options that you might not have initially known about.
