Golf: Ohio loses its momentum in final tournament of season

By Bobby Gorbett | For The Post

Ohio lost its rhythm in the final tournament of the season at the Mid-American Conference Championship with a dead-last eighth place finish.

The Bobcats finished the three day tournament with a total team score of 919, which was 38 strokes off the pace of winner Kent State. Although Ohio has struggled at different points in the season, it appeared that the Bobcats were peaking at just the right time, coming off of two-straight top five finishes heading into the MAC Championship.

Any momentum the Bobcats could carry into the final tournament of the year came to a screeching halt when the Bobcats shot the highest stroke total of day one at 308 strokes. As weather conditions worsened over the tournament, the golf course became more difficult, and Ohio once again struggled to adjust, shooting a tournament high 320 strokes.

The Bobcats kept battling on day three, and despite an ugly start to the tournament, the Bobcats kept battling in the third round to tie for the third-best round of the day at 291 strokes. However, a great third round couldn’t lift the Bobcats from last place, and they finished the tournament at 8th place.

Despite a poor team performance, Tanner Johnson and Sam Hogan finished in the top 20 as individuals. Johnson began his tournament with a +4 round of 76 in round one. Johnson fell victim, like most players, to the difficult conditions in round two and shot a 78 and ended round two in a tie for 20th. In round three, Johnson rebounded with an even par round of 72 to leap up five spots as he tied for 15th in the end. Johnson finished with a total score of 226 and 10 strokes over par.

The Bobcats’ other top 20 performance came from Hogan. Hogan got out to a slow start in the tournament with a first round score of 78, Hogan was able to repeat his round one total in more difficult conditions in round two as he once again shot a +6 score of 78. Hogan was one of the only players to shoot under par in the third round, and scored a one under par round of 71. Hogan finished the tournament with a total three round score of 227 and +11.

The Bobcats didn’t get the result they were looking for in the MAC Championship, but with a couple of strong performances to finish the season, the Bobcats can start a new chapter in 2023 with their heads held high.
