Jefferson Hall reopened and three residence halls on South Green were torn down as part of projects that were completed this summer. Altogether, the projects cost Housing and Residence Life more than $53 million.

The most expensive project, making up $39.1 million of that total, was Jefferson Hall, whose renovations started in fall 2015.

The renovations included updated rooms, various campus commons and a Living Learning Center for East Green residents. Jefferson Hall will be a first-year residence hall.

Students will also notice the landscape on South Green has changed. Three residence halls — Martzolff House, O’Bleness House and Fenzel House — were demolished in May for $3 million as part of the Housing Master Plan.

The design work for the demolition project began in fall 2016, and the actual demolition began the last week of May, Gregory Robertson, assistant vice president for Architecture, Design and Construction, said.

Students in Gamertsfelder Hall will notice lobby renovations that cost $827,000. Robertson said the renovations included new carpet and lighting similar to the renovations James Hall lobby received last summer.

For $330,000, James Hall received washers and dryers and a hot water heater for a new laundry room.

The bathrooms in Tiffin Hall received a $2 million facelift.

Because of the Jefferson Hall renovations, East Green had the most expensive upgrades with a grand total of nearly $43 million. South Green had nearly $5 million in renovations that were completed this summer, and West Green renovations come out to be under $4 million.

Only two projects, one that upgraded the Mackinnon Hall mailroom and one that converted Ryors Hall rec room to a mailroom, started and finished during the summer. Each of those projects cost $90,000.

Last summer, Housing and Residence Life spent more than $7.7 million renovating bathrooms, furniture and lobbies in various residence halls. In summer 2015, renovation costs totaled about $12 million.
