They say Athens happens, and this summer it really did. The happenings all started when a certain popstar decided to pay an Ohio University student’s college expenses. Here’s what you missed from each month over the summer:
Back in May, Nicki Minaj decided to surprise her fans by paying their college-related fees. Devonte Portis, a sophomore at OU and @hourdrive on Twitter, tweeted at Minaj asking her for help in paying $1,800 to return to OU in the fall. Minaj said she would pay it.

“I feel fortunate to be a part of a fanbase where the artist loves her fans. She’s helped me through a lot with her music and interaction,” Portis said in a previous Post report. “People ask all the time why I'm obsessed with her and it's reasons like this! She's such a genuine and sweet person.”
In June, the first ever Athens Pride Fest took place with all things rainbow, including a magical rainbow horse named Emma. The horse galloped through College Green, and was brought by former state Rep. Debbie Phillips, according to a previous Post report. People loved Emma.
Also in June, people fired back at an Ashland University student who bashed OU on Twitter. The responses made everyone prOUd.
As we all approach Welcome Weekend and all the activities that go with that, it’s common knowledge that Athens will surely happen again. Stay tuned!
