Heading off to college may seem challenging in terms of adjusting to a hectic schedule that never seems to slow down. In the midst of the meetings, classes, homework, and late nights, some areas of life might take a back seat. For a majority, one of the areas is healthy eating.
Without the comfort of a home-cooked meal and a dining hall full of fast food, it’s easy to reach for the pizza and ice cream. Thankfully, living in a dorm does not set you up for failure in terms of maintaining good health. College is the perfect opportunity to create healthy eating patterns and choose alternatives that will bring better mental health and performance in your classes. Here’s a few healthy snack options to help spice up your college student diet:

Carrots and hummus: a match made in heaven. When running from class to class, the duo is the perfect option for a quick snack on-the-go. Hummus is protein-rich and the perfect vehicle to help spice up your veggies.
Try swapping bread, crackers and chips for rice cakes. The options are endless in terms of toppings. Avocado and pepper, strawberries and almond butter, and hummus and sliced peppers all are great options for toppings. Although they lack nutrients alone, rice cakes are the perfect crunchy snack when paired with other ingredients.
When you don’t have a kitchen, you must improvise. Thankfully, this five minute snack is dorm-friendly and the perfect pick me up. Take a tortilla or flatbread, spread a nut butter of your choice, roll in a banana and slice like sushi. It doesn’t get easier.
Avoid the high sugar in candy and opt for a healthier alternative. The options are endless with dried bananas, oranges, apples, mangoes, raisons, etc.
It’s always good to be prepared when going from class to class. Lärabars are the perfect gluten-free option to throw in your bookbag when you need a snack on-the-go.
Satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing alternatives that will still keep your health in check. Justin’s Dark Chocolate Cups are the perfect •vegan, •gluten-free and non-GMO candy. Dark chocolate can mediate stress levels, improve memory and help induce sleep.
Craving ice cream? Try dipping fresh fruit in yogurt and freezing it for a healthy frozen dessert. The natural sugars in fruit will keep energy levels stable and avoid a sugar-coma crash. Happy snacking!
