Fashion is easy to find in Athens with closeby boutiques

Alexis Eichelberger / For The Post

With malls and other large shopping centers being few and far between in southeast Ohio, students at Ohio University might struggle to find new clothing on short notice. Luckily, the women of Athens can get their shopping fix within walking distance at any of three boutiques on or close to Court Street.

Figleaf - 57 N Court St.

Figleaf is a small, chic shop with plenty of trendy pieces perfect for college students.

“We sell affordable college girl-style clothes, usually more dressy stuff like date party dresses,” Courtney Smith, an employee at Figleaf, said.

Smith, a junior studying strategic communication, said Figleaf stocks a wide selection of occasion dresses for date parties, socials, formals and graduations, and also keeps some jeans and graphic tees on hand for more casual outings.

She said she’s had her eye on a crop top jumpsuit set for some time and has also bought a black, off-the-shoulder date party dress and a pair of casual sandals at the shop.

Bluetique - 19 W State St.

Bluetique is another cute shopping spot just off Court Street. Their clothes and accessories attract customers of all ages, from middle schoolers to women in their ‘70s, Marissa Whaley, manager of Bluetique, said.

Whaley said her shop’s clothing works well for Greek life functions like date parties as well as holidays. She said the store is busiest in August, when students first arrive in Athens, and in the spring.
“I love our clothing,” Whaley said. “We have a lot of different things so it’s hard just to pick one (favorite).”

The Other Place - 43 S Court St.

The Other Place differs a bit from Figleaf and Bluetique by offering more of a casual selection of clothing. In addition to some more formal pieces and business attire, The Other Place stocks more hipster, boho-style pieces like sundresses, employee Aleigh Beard said.

Beard, a sophomore studying fashion event planning, said another signature element of The Other Place is its collection of Sperry Top-Siders and TOMS shoes it sells year round.

“I like (our clothes) for fest season,” she said. “We have a lot of crop tops for fun, outdoors-type things.”

Beard said her personal favorite piece she’s bought at The Other Place is a pair of short, comfortable brown booties.

“I wear them with almost everything,” she said. “They’re super comfortable.”
